I used to work in
Ballard, which is a little Scandanavian neighborhood here in Seattle. There's a
Great Harvest Breads down there. I used to go in and get sandwiches a lot. They had some rather tasty varieties of bread and, so, I'd use those to have either a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (this was usually made with a sweet bread) or a hummus sandwich (have I mentioned that I LOVE hummus?) made with savory breads. Sometimes, instead of a sandwich, I'd get soup, which comes with a free roll. They also offer free slices of bread with fresh butter, which is wonderful when you see something you'd love, but you know your husband probably wouldn't eat any of.
But my favorite thing to buy was challah. They made challah every Friday, and I'd try to get a sandwich made with it, plus another slice. Sometimes, I'd buy a whole loaf and end up eating most of it myself. It was the thing that made me glad to be going to work. I might have been making telemarketing calls, but it was okay... I got good bread out of it.
I don't work in Ballard anymore. And, while I don't miss the bus trip (it takes an hour to an hour and a half to get there by bus from my place), I DO miss the challah.
